“…The most recent list of species and synonyms of the genus was produced by Nemésio & Rasmussen (2011), who proposed a total of 66 valid names. After this work, Nemésio & Santos-Júnior (2013) described Eufriesea zhangi and González & Griswold (2017) described three new species more: Eufriesea engeli, Eufriesea barthelli, and Eufriesea oliveri (González, et al, 2017) thus completing 70 species registered for the genus.…”

“…The new species documented here belongs to the coerulescens species group, which was recently revised by Gonzalez et al (2017). This species group consists of six species presumably restricted to México along tropical dry forests, as well as in pine and oak forests, from sea level to about 1500 m in elevation.…”

“…This archipelago was designated as the Islas Marías Biosphere Reserve in 2010 by UNESCO and the Mexican Government, and it is currently under the protection of the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources of México (SEMARNAT-CONANP). We have been aware of the novelty of this species for more than a decade (Ayala and Engel 2008;Gonzalez et al 2017), but it was awaiting description because of the limited number of available specimens. The new species was initially known to us from two females captured during an expedition led by the Instituto de Biología of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in the mid-1980s on the island of María Madre (Fig.…”

“…Orchid bees are well known for their external morphological features such as metallic body coloration and long mouthparts, and also for the peculiar perfume collecting behavior of the males (Dressler 1982, Roubik and Hanson 2004). The Euglossini are the only bees within the corbiculate clade (Apini, Bombini, Euglossini, and Meliponini) that are restricted to the neotropics (Cardinal and Packer 2007, Engel et al 2009), reaching their northernmost distribution in northwestern Mexico, where at least three species of the around 35 found in the country have been recorded (Búrquez 1997, Gonzalez et al 2017). Orchid bees are powerful long distance flyers, such that females have been found to fly several kilometers while foraging (Janzen 1971, López-Uribe et al 2008), and males have been recaptured nearly 100 km away (Pokorny et al 2015).…”
