Model predictive control (MPC) has established itself as a promising control methodology in power electronics. This survey paper highlights the most relevant MPC techniques for power electronic systems. These can be classified into two major groups, namely, MPC without modulator, referred to as direct MPC, and MPC with a subsequent modulation stage, known as indirect MPC. Design choices and parameters that affect the system performance, closed-loop stability and controller robustness are discussed. Moreover, solvers and control platforms that can be employed for the real-time implementation of MPC algorithms are presented. Finally, the MPC schemes in question are assessed, among others, in terms of design and computational complexity, along with their performance and applicability depending on the power electronic system at hand.

Recently, an efficient multistep direct model predictive control (MPC) scheme for power converters has been proposed. It relies on the Sphere Decoding Algorithm (SDA) to solve the associated longhorizon optimal control problem. Since the SDA evaluates only a small number of candidate solutions to find the optimal one, a significant reduction in the average computational burden can be achieved compared to the basic exhaustive search approach. However, this is only true during steady-state operation. In fact, the SDA still requires a large execution time during transients. This paper shows that if not properly addressed, the dynamic performance of the system may be degraded, which clearly limits its practical application. To mitigate this issue, which particularly arises during transients, an efficient preconditioning approach for the SDA is proposed. This approach ensures that only a small number of candidate solutions are evaluated during both steady-state and transients. This allows the multistep direct MPC to become a viable control alternative for power converters operating at low semiconductor switching frequencies, e.g., below 450 Hz. The proposal is validated using a grid-connected three-level converter as a case study. Both processor-in-the-loop simulations and experimental results on a scaled-down 2.24 kVA laboratory setup are presented. Model Predictive Control (MPC) is a promising technique for control of electric drives, as it enables to optimize multiple parameters and offers operation with non-linear systems. Implementation of MPC for high speed/high-pole drives with high rated fundamental frequency-from few hundred up to thousand Hz-poses many challanges due to the low G sampling to fundamental frequency ratio around the rated speed of the machine. The paper proposes a novel MPC scheme, where the sampling frequency is sychronized to the fundamental frequency to improve the performance. The algorithm can be implemented on a digital device by the recursive equations given in the paper. As it is shown, the method can reduce the number of switchings, achieve better harmonic performance and reduce the torque ripple at the same sampling frequency without synchronization at low G values.
