On the importance of the nonuniform aortic stiffening in the hemodynamics of physiological aging

Abstract: Mathematical models of the arterial tree constitute a valuable tool to investigate the hemodynamics of aging and pathology. Rendering such models as patient specific could allow for the assessment of central hemodynamic variables of clinical interest. However, this task is challenging, particularly with respect to the tuning of the local area compliance that varies significantly along the arterial tree. Accordingly, in this study, we demonstrate the importance of taking into account the differential effects of… Show more

“…Total peripheral resistance and arterial compliance were altered according to the literature ( Langewouters, 1982 ; Lu and Mukkamala, 2006 ; Segers et al, 2008 ). To simulate older or hypertensive individuals, in some cases, stiffening in the aorta was considered as non-uniform and more pronounced as described in our previous works ( Pagoulatou et al, 2019 ; Bikia et al, 2020a ). For a given set of input parameters, the model provides analytical solutions of the pressure and flow at every arterial segment.…”

“…The selected distributions of the input model parameters are summarized in Table 2 . The parameters of arterial distensibility and terminal compliance were altered simultaneously, while nonuniform aortic stiffening was considered for the elderly and hypertensive virtual subjects, following the methodology described in our previous work ( Bikia et al, 2019 ; Pagoulatou et al, 2019 ). Peripheral resistances were modified uniformly in order to achieve the specific value of total peripheral resistance in the selected range.…”

“…Especially, variation of arterial distensibility of all arteries was performed in a uniform manner with respect to the variation of the aortic distensibility. In specific cases, the model accounted for non-uniform and more pronounced aortic stiffening, as previously described in related works 17 , 18 , to simulate older or hypertensive individuals. By inputting a specific set of parameters, the model generated analytical solutions for pressure and flow at each arterial segment.…”
