Summary: The number (N) and size distribution of particles (PSD) of a styrene emulsion polymerization above the CMC were studied by means of asymmetric flow‐field flow fractionation (AF4). Bimodal PSDs were obtained, suggesting that coagulation of the primary particles is not as extensive as would be expected, according to the coagulative mechanism. AF4 allowed it to be demonstrated that N is constant during interval II, and that the resolution limit of other particle sizing techniques can lead to erroneous mechanistic inferences, from the evolution of N.Particle size distribution measured at low conversion for the emulsion polymerization of styrene, obtained by AF4 and DLS. Significant progress has been made over the past 20–30 years in terms of the ability to develop and solve mechanistic models of emulsion polymerization processes, and in particular models for prediction of the particle size distribution. However, this does not imply that modeling of these economically important processes is by any means a “solved problem,” or that it is no longer necessary to perform fundamental research in this area. There are a number of areas where strong scientific work would increase the understanding of the process, including events in the aqueous phase, radical entry into growing particles, monomer partitioning, and especially the mechanisms and modeling of particle coagulation.

Summary: The effect of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on the mass transfer rate between styrene and water has been investigated. SDS increases the solubility of styrene in water even below the critical micelle concentration (CMC) and therefore increases the thermodynamic driving force for the mass transfer. The mass transfer coefficient however is not altered by SDS, even if the interface is almost saturated with emulsifier.
