On the Large-Scale Structure of the Universe as given by the Voronoi Diagrams

Abstract: The size distributions of 2D and 3D Voronoi cells and of cells of V p (2, 3),-2D cut of 3D Voronoi diagram-are explored, with the singleparameter (re-scaled) gamma distribution playing a central role in the analytical fitting. Observational evidence for a cellular universe is briefly reviewed. A simulated V p (2, 3) map with galaxies lying on the cell boundaries is constructed to compare, as regards general appearance, with the observed CFA map of galaxies and voids, the parameters of the simulation being so c… Show more

“…A great number of natural phenomena are described by Poisson Voronoi diagrams; for example: lattices in quantum field theory, see Drouffe & Itzykson (1984); conductivity and percolation in granular composites, see Jerauld et al (1984aJerauld et al ( , 1984b; modeling growth of metal clusters on amorphous substrates, see Dicenzo & Wertheim (1989); the statistical mechanics of simple glassforming systems in 2D, see Hentschel et al (2007); modeling of material interface evolution in grain growth of polycrystalline materials, see Lee & Chen (2006). A review of Voronoi diagrams applied to the spatial distribution of the galaxies can be found in Zaninetti (2006). Here we are interested in the fragmentation of a 2D layer of thickness negligible with respect to the main dimension.…”
