On the Life History of White Grub, Holotrichia consanguinea Blanch. (Coleopt., Melolonthidae)

Abstract

White grub, Holotrichia consanguinea Blanch., is a serious pest of groundnut crop in light soils in western districts of Uttar Pradesh. Besides groundnut, maize, sorghum, Bajra and soyabean crops have also been found damaged by this pest in these districts. Studies on the life history of this pest indicate that the beetles emerge with premonsoon showers in June. Egg laying starts at least a fortnight after the emergence of beetles i.e., in July with the onset of monsoon. Eggs are laid individually in the soil and there are three grub instars. Pupation occurs deep in the soil and pupal stage lasts about a fortnight. Adults are formed around November and remain in soil till they emerge in June next year. There is one generation of this pest in a year. Zusammenfassung Zur Lebensweise des Blatthornkäfers Holotrichia consanguinea Blanch. Die Engerlinge von H. consanguinea sind in Uttar Pradesh bedeutende Schädlinge der Erdnuß in leichteren Böden. Daneben befallen sie auch Mais, Sorghum, Bajra und Sojabohnen. Die Käfer schlüpfen mit dem Vormonsun‐Regen im Juni. Ei‐Ablage ist etwa 14 Tage später zu Beginn des Monsuns. Die Eier werden einzeln in den Boden gelegt. 3 Engerlingsstadien sind zu unterscheiden. Der erwachsene Engerling verpuppt sich tief im Boden. Die nach 14 Tagen schlüpfenden Käfer bleiben bis zum Juni des nächsten Jahres im Boden, so daß die Art nur 1 Generation im Jahr hat.
