On the Luminescent Properties of Some Rare Earth Ions in Zinc Borate as a Host

Abstract: Zinc borate, ZnB204, melting at 1000~ forms a glass of high optical perfection which can be cast readily or pulled into almost any shape. Rare earths can be introduced in the cation sites with compensation by Na 1+ to give glasses of the generic formula LnxNaxZnl-2xB20~. The rare earths Sm ~+, Eu 8 +, Tb 3+, Dy 3+, and Tm 3 +, all emitting in the visible, were introduced into zinc borate and emission spectra as well as the optimum of x for fluorescent emission were determined. For a rod of the composition Nd0.… Show more

“…In 1964, some more papers on the luminescence of ZnS were published, e.g., a publication by Jaffe and Banks 80 85 studied the luminescent properties of some rare earth ions in ZnB 2 O 4 . Sm 3ϩ , Eu 3ϩ , Tb 3ϩ , Dy 3ϩ , and Tm 3ϩ were introduced into the zinc borate and the emission spectra were determined.…”

“…In 1965, Ropp 84 communicated on the luminescence of Eu in the ternary system La 2 O 3 •Gd 2 O 3 •Y 2 O 3 and explained the field perturbation of the excited Eu 3ϩ state by an exciton mechanism. Brixner 85 studied the luminescent properties of some rare earth ions in ZnB 2 O 4 . Sm 3ϩ , Eu 3ϩ , Tb 3ϩ , Dy 3ϩ , and Tm 3ϩ were introduced into the zinc borate and the emission spectra were determined.…”
