On the Morphodynamic Alterations around Bridge Piers under the Influence of Instream Mining

Abstract: Sand mining in an active alluvial channel can compromise the streambed stability of the hydraulic structures nearby. This experimental study is aimed at investigating the effects of rectangular mining pit on the morphodynamics around circular tandem piers in a movable bed. A rectangular pit is excavated upstream of two circular piers embedded in the sand-bed in a tandem arrangement. The results are then compared to a case having only the piers without any mining pit. Turbulent stresses and mean velocities in t… Show more

“…[11] and Barman et al [13,14], the excavation of a pit in an alluvial channel can induce erosion in the downstream side and can cause streambed instabilities around hydraulic structures such as bridge piers. Lade et al [18] conducted experimental research on a rectangular pit that was excavated upstream of two circular piers embedded in the sand-bed in a tandem arrangement. They found that mining activities near the piers can lead to significant changes in the flow field, causing excessive scour around piers.…”

“…The authors have been studying fluvial geomorphology and transport behavior of sediments (erosion/deposition) in alluvial channels, where turbulence plays as a key parameter in various fluvial environments such as: flow in a channel with curvilinear cross-section 7 , flows over bedforms 8 , flows with vegetation 9 , flows around bridge piers 10 , and flows in sand mined channels 11 . For the present study, we carried out extensive experiments in a laboratory flume setup at Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati.…”
