On the Relations between Host and Parasite in the Bromes and their Brown Rust, Puccinia dispersa (Erikss.)

Abstract: Ward.-On Relations between Host and Parasite 2. THE RUSTS OF THE BROMES. In their book on the Rusts of the Cereals, published in 1896 \ Eriksson and Henning gave detailed descriptions of six species of Puccinia. Of these four also occur on various species of Bromus.

“…18,19 In this sense, NLRs could be conceived as guard proteins similar to plant NB-LRRs. 20 21 and the counter-intuitive term 'hypersensitiveness' was coined in 1915, 22 to describe a pathogen-triggered cell death reaction that correlated with disease resistance in wheat infected with Puccinia graminis. Morphologically, HR is a specific and unique type of cell death.…”

“…Hypersensitive responses were first described in the context of plant defence against microbial disease (Ward, 1902;Stakman, 1915;Klement and Goodman, 1967). A hypersensitive response is made visible by a rapid, locally restricted necrosis of cells at the infection site.…”

“…conditions were right the fungus suppos edly grew out of certain cells containing this "mycoplasm" and spread throughout the leaf in that area. Ward (1882) had already shown that the coffee rust fungus, Hemileia vastatrix Berk & Br., infected coffee by entrance of germ tubes through stoma ta. He showed that these germ tubes originated from germinated urediospores on the surface of the leaf.…”
