In a hybrid university learning environment, the rapid identification of students’ learning styles seems to be essential to achieve complementarity between conventional face-to-face pedagogical strategies and the application of new strategies using virtual technologies. In this context, this research aims to generate a predictive model to detect undergraduates’ learning style profiles quickly. The methodological design consists of applying a k-means clustering algorithm to identify the students’ learning style profiles and a decision tree C4.5 algorithm to predict the student’s membership to the previously identified groups. A cluster sample design was used with Chilean engineering students. The research result is a predictive model that, with few questions, detects students’ profiles with an accuracy of 82.93%; this prediction enables a rapid adjustment of teaching methods in a hybrid learning environment.

Measuring the Effect of Learning Style Preference on Learners’ Argumentative Essay Writing Across Different Writing Strategies

The investigation attempted to measure the effect of learning style preference across two different writing strategies in writing classes. The 58 subjects recruited from L2 classes comprised 19 visual, 21 auditory, and 18 kinesthetic learners. A 3x2 analysis of variance test was applied to work with the experimental data. The output confirmed a statistically significant interaction effect occurred among types of writing strategy (x1) and learning style preference (x2) on learners' writing performance (y) at F (2, 57) =5.754, p= 0.006. There was also a significant effect of learning style preference at F (1, 57) = 70.949, p = 0.000. The analysis showed that learning style preference differed significantly among the three groups. Here, visual and auditory performed better on average than kinesthetic learners for writing performance. The main effect also confirmed a statistically significant effect of types of writing strategy occurred at F (2, 57) = 22.884, p = 0.000. Here, graphic organizers (GOs) differed significantly from non-graphic organizers (NGOs).

Each individual possesses a distinct essence that sets them apart, even in the case of identical twins. In language acquisition, learners’ personality type has emerged as one of the most determining constructions for students’ learning strategy. Through a phenomenological case study, intricate interplay between personality types and language learning strategies of two Indonesian identical twin girls studying English language education were investigated, supported by one triangulator participant. By employing the Oxford (1990) Strategy Inventory for Language Learning and the MBTI test, the researchers gathered the extensive data on their language learning strategy distinctions and personality differences. The results indicate that despite sharing the same upbringing, their diverse personalities - one an ENFJ and the other an ENTJ - have contributed to vastly different cognitive, memorization, compensation, metacognitive, social learning, and affective learning approaches. The findings provide intriguing insights into the intricacies of language acquisition and highlight the significance of individual differences in shaping the learning styles.
