Anxiety has a significant effect on oral communication, particularly when it occurs in the form of a public address. The quality of a public academic speaker's oral presentation may highly be determined by a variety of emotive elements. However, this has received much too little attention in the realm of academic dissertation oral defense presentations, despite the fact that this process may be incredibly nerve-wracking for both novice and experienced postgraduates, EFL learners in particular. In the current study, 68 Chinese EFL Ph.D. candidates consented to complete a revamped version of the Personal Report of Public Speaking Anxiety (PRPSA). Chinese EFL postgraduates reported an average high level of public speaking anxiety (X=4.34) during their doctoral dissertation defense presentations, as measured by three categorical variables: public speaking apprehension (X=4.40), self-behavior management (X=4.35), and fear of negative evaluation (X=4.26). Throughout Ph.D. candidate participants’ dissertation defense, fifteen anxiety-related questionnaire items were recognized to be the most anxiety-provoking conditions in terms of public speaking anxiety. In addition, differences in gender and graduate study specialization were not significantly associated with Chinese EFL Ph.D. candidates’ experiences with public speaking anxiety. Despite the findings, research has revealed that Ph.D. candidates in English as a Foreign Language from China exhibit statistically significant levels of anxiety related to public speaking, and as a result, pedagogical recommendations have been proposed. There is ample evidence that the success or failure of language learning is influenced by psychological processes in learners' minds. This review attempted to review the related studies on the relationship between English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners' emotional intelligence, communication apprehension, and self-efficacy. Few studies have been done on the correlation between self-efficacy and emotional intelligence. A positive significant correlation between emotional intelligence and self-efficacy has been confirmed in the literature. Studies have shown that interpersonal relationships, self-awareness, problem-solving skills, self-adequacy, self-confidence, self-actualization, and stress tolerance can act as mediator variables in the correlation between self-efficacy and emotional intelligence among EFL learners. Moreover, the related studies have shown that emotional intelligence is significantly correlated with communication apprehension. The investigations have accentuated the mediating role of learners' willingness to communicate and academic achievement in the correlation between emotional intelligence and communication apprehension. The correlation between communication apprehension and self-efficacy has been verified in the related literature. Finally, the pedagogical implications are expanded to foster language learning quality. This review also provides some suggestions for further research to elucidate our viewpoints over emotional variables and their interactions with each other.

Is The Job Performance of Tourism Academicians Related to their Emotional Intelligence?

The aim of the research is to determine whether the job performances of tourism academics in Türkiye are related to emotional intelligence. Further, this research is anendeavor to investigate whether emotional intelligence and job performance differ according to demographic variables. “Job Performance Scale” adapted by Yang and Hwang (2014) was used to measure the job performance of academicians. In addition to that “Rotterdam Emotional Intelligence Scale” developed by Pekaar, Bakker, Linden, and Born (2017) and adapted to Turkish by Tanrıöğen and Türker (2019) was used to measure their emotional intelligence. The research sample consists of academicians working in Tourism Faculties, Vocational Schools and Tourism Colleges in Türkiye. As a result of the analyzes made in line with reaching the goal, it is determined that the job performances of tourism academicians have a positive and moderately significant relationship with their emotional intelligence. Both job performance and emotional intelligence did not differ by gender. A difference was found between job performance with both academic title and working time factors. It is also found that emotional intelligence differs partially according to the marital status of the academicians. Other results are presented in the findings section.
