On the resolution of plenoptic PIV

Abstract: Plenoptic PIV offers a simple, single camera solution for volumetric velocity measurements of fluid flow. However, due to the novel manner in which the particle images are acquired and processed, few references exist to aid in determining the resolution limits of the measurements. This manuscript provides a framework for determining the spatial resolution of plenoptic PIV based on camera design and experimental parameters. This information can then be used to determine the smallest length scales of flows that … Show more

“…The presented framework provides answers and generic solutions to a question a researcher raised in a forum [12] and received recommendations from peers, indicating demands and potentials for future projects. Research directions that may benefit from this software include experimental photography [11], cinematography [13] or scientific fields ranging from volumetric fluid particle flow [14] to the many kinds of clinical studies [1,2,3,4].…”

“…A high-speed system that combines the tomographic and holographic approaches was reported by Buchmann et al in 2013 [122]. Furthermore, volumetric PIV measurements with a light-field camera form part of ongoing research [123][124][125][126]. A high-speed system based on light-field PIV is a topic for future research.…”
