On the seasonal variability of the Canary Current and the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation

Abstract: The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is continually monitored along 26°N by the RAPID‐MOCHA array. Measurements from this array show a 6.7 Sv seasonal cycle for the AMOC, with a 5.9 Sv contribution from the upper mid‐ocean. Recent studies argue that the dynamics of the eastern Atlantic is the main driver for this seasonal cycle; specifically, Rossby waves excited south of the Canary Islands. Using inverse modeling, hydrographic, mooring, and altimetry data, we describe the seasonal cycle of t… Show more

“…The amplitude of the seasonal cycle for fall 2016–spring 2017 equal 4.2 ± 0.34 Sv, comparable to an amplitude of 3.7 ± 0.4 Sv estimated by Vélez‐Belchí et al (2017) for the Eastern Boundary (EB). Unlike for 2016–2017, the amplitude for fall 2017‐spring 2018 is higher, equaling 7.6 ± 0.6 Sv, a value comparable in magnitude to that estimated by Pérez‐Herández et al (2015) for the Atlantic basin at 26°N.…”

“…To analyse the role of tidal current speed on the source mechanism of tremors, we computed the kinetic energy from the current-meter velocity recordings at the Eastern Boundary Current 4 (EBC4) mooring (e.g., Vélez-Belchí et al, 2017). These instruments acquire velocity, temperature, salinity, and pressure data at a sampling time of 2 hours and are located close to the OBS network (Figure 1).…”

“…Further north at Cape Ghir at 30 • N, it is weaker in the annual mean, but with a late spring to August summer maximum (Mittelstaedt, 1991). The component parallel to the coast with its maximum in spring and summer creates the strongest coastal upwelling, with maxima depending regionally on the wind maxima in summer (Van Camp et al, 1991). The offshore Ekman transport is confined to the near surface and has two further effects.…”
