On the static and dynamic properties of fiber-reinforced polymer composites

Abstract: This article establishes a reliable constitutive model to describe the behaviors of fiber-reinforced polymer composites under quasi-static and dynamic loading. This model integrates the contributions of all the three phases of a composite: the fiber, the matrix, and the fiber/matrix interphase, which make it capable of capturing the key micromechanical effect of the interphase on the macroscopic mechanical properties of composites. The interphase is taken as a transversely isotropic material together with the … Show more

“…The material properties of the fiber and matrix provided by Ghafarizadeh et al 5 and Chippendale et al 27 are given in Table 1, in which the mechanical and thermal properties of the interphase was obtained by using the three phase model developed in our previous work. 28 Due to the elastic brittle behavior of CFRP, the heat generated by plastic deformation of fiber is negligible and the unique heat source taken into account in the model was produced by the friction at the contact surface between the tool and workpiece. The friction between the cutting tool and fiber plays an important role in the machining of composites.…”

“…Moreover, it has been studied that the machinability of the CFRP composites was correlated with the material properties, which was significantly affected by the interphase. 6,25 And the model has been presented and validated to characterize the modulus distribution of the interphase between the fiber and the matrix in previous work. 25 As shown in Figure 1, a RVE with three different constituent phases is then established in the microstructure, i.e.…”
