On the Support of Scientific Workflows over Pub/Sub Brokers

Abstract: The execution of scientific workflows is gaining importance as more computing resources are available in the form of grid environments. The Publish/Subscribe paradigm offers well-proven solutions for sustaining distributed scenarios while maintaining the high level of task decoupling required by scientific workflows. In this paper, we propose a new model for supporting scientific workflows that improves the dissemination of control events. The proposed solution is based on the mapping of workflow tasks to the … Show more

“…Yet, the actual actions to be taken should be defined. One example where action upon exception detection is addressed is presented by Morales et al [110], offering a basic mechanism for restoring the system and recovering from exceptions. Being generic, it does not entail compensating actions of any kind.…”

“…Second, over BLE, a Publish/Subscribe protocol will be deployed. Actually, the use of the Publish/Subscribe communication paradigm facilitates binding between data sources and consumers of data [ 76 ], as the intermediate entity called “broker” manages registration and decouples entities in time and space. This improves system architecture flexibility (which deals with REQ#4 and REQ#2), as data sources do not have to be aware of the existence or number of data consumers and vice versa .…”

“…In order to support various communication channels, a communication middleware must be provided. In previous work [16] we proposed a mobile middleware solution for continuous service invocation based on communication channels and a specific Publish/Subscribe network [17] to enable the loosely coupled communication.…”
