On the Tertiary history of genus Acer Linneus in Bulgaria

Abstract: The taxonomic composition has been established and the development has been traced back of genus Acer L. in the Tertiaty flora of Bulgaria. The palaeofloristic data up to now, prove the existence of 15 species belonging to 8 sections: Acer. Goniocarpa, Ginnala, Rubra, Campestria, Platanoidea, Trifoliata and Palmata. Acer protohyrcanum is described as a new species. The evolution of the genus in Bulgaria is characterised by three main stages. The most considerable development of the genus takes place during the… Show more

“…Prior to the present study, only one fossil record had been definitively linked to Passiflora subgenus Decaloba : fossil seeds assigned to Passiflora bulgarica from the Miocene of Bulgaria (Palamarev, 1971; Palamarev et al, 1999, 2005; Hermsen, 2021). Passiflora bulgarica is similar to seeds of the extant species P. suberosa L. (Palamarev, 1971; Hermsen, 2021); Hermsen (2021) placed P. bulgarica in supersection Cieca on the basis of the diagnostic characteristics of seed shape and ornamentation pattern.…”

“…About 32 fossil macrofloras are known from NW Bulgaria (Palamarev 1988(Palamarev , 1990(Palamarev , 1993Palamarev & Petkova 1987). The revised taxonomy of fossil flora (Palamarev et al 2005) is used in this study. For the present study four floras of Volhynian and three of Bessrabian age were chosen.…”

“…First evidence about the onset of peri-Aegean fluviolacustrine systems comes from the late Middle Miocene (Karpatian? -Badenian -Sarmatian: Palamarev et a!., 1999;Vatsev, 1999). The start of the neotectonic stage is marked by beginning Late Badenian -Early Sarmatian disintegration of the peneplain.…”

“…The palaeobotanical data (Palamarev et al, 1999) point at climate changes in Pliocene time: from tropical through subtropical and semiarid to arid, and finally, to a moderate climate. The tectonic control was also of utmost importance, and the course of the rivers underwent considerable changes due to uplift of longitudinal and transversal horsts.…”
