By %IKP and 1t. KEIPNRTo explain the quantum Hall effect (QHE) as a macroscopic quantum phenomenon with interference character the liquid site model is discussed in more detail. The calculated thermodynamic potential containing the magnetic field energy shows minima near the filling factors v = p / ( 2 n + 1) ( p = 1,2, ...; n = 0, 1,2, ...). Electron correlation in strong magnetic fields leads t o a local Hall potential satisfying the two-dimensional Laplace equation. The liquid site model permits t o discuss the necessity for a n optimum degree of disorder as well as the high precision attainable in &HE measurements.Um den Quantenhalleffekt (QHE) als makroskopisches Quantenphiinomen mit Interferenzcharakter zu erklaren, wird das "liquid site"-Model1 ausfiihrlicher diskutiert. Das berechnete thermodynamische Potential, das die magnetische Feldenergie enthalt, zeigt Minima in der Niihe des Fullfaktors v = p/(2n + 1) ( p = 1,2, ... ; n = 0, 1, 2, ...). Elektronenkorrelation in starken Magnetfeldern fiihrt zu einem lokalen Hallpotential, das der zweidimensionalen Laplacegleichung genugt. Das "liquid site"-Modell erlaubt, sowohl die Notwendigkeit fur einen optimalen Grad der Fehlordnung als auch die hohe Priizision, die in QHE-Messungen erreichbar ist, zu diskutieren.

In den zehn Jahren, die seit seiner Entdekkung durch Klaus von Klitzing [1] nunmehr verstrichen sind, hat der Quanten‐Hall‐Effekt (QHE) nichts von seiner ursprünglichen Faszination eingebüßt. Nach wie vor werden ihm in aller Welt unzählige Forschungsprojekte gewidmet, und nach wie vor garantiert er hohe Besucherzahlen im Physikalischen Kolloquium. Der QHE ist Lehrbuchstoff geworden [2]. Wo steht aber seine Theorie? In einem früheren Bericht [3] mußte konstatiert werden, daß eine Theorie, die diese Bezeichnung wirklich verdient, weil sie prüfbare Voraussagen macht, nicht in Sicht sei. Leider trifft diese Feststellung auch heute noch zu [4]. Das vielzitierte, in [3] ausführlich beschriebene Eichargument von Laughlin [5] gibt nicht weniger Rätsel auf als der experimentelle Befund selbst. Manche Experten, die dieses Eichargument als Erklärung des QHE hinstellen, geben im kleinen Kreis schmunzelnd zu: So recht eigentlich hätten sie es auch nicht verstanden. Wenn auch der Durchbruch in der Theorie noch nicht geglückt ist, so hat sich doch die Vermutung, daß dem QHE ein Lokalisierungs‐Delokalisierungs‐Übergang (LD‐Übergang) zugrunde liegt, weiter erhärtet. Es sind auch quantitative Ansätze entwickelt worden, die sich als fruchtbar erweisen könnten — zumindest indem sie helfen, das zu lösende Problem weiter einzugrenzen. Einige dieser Ansätze vorzustellen, ist das Ziel des vorliegenden Berichtes. Die inhaltliche Überlappung mit dem früheren [3] wurde auf ein unumgängliches Minimum beschränkt. Auf den sehr interessanten mesoskopischen QHE können wir leider nur kurz eingehen. Er würde einen eigenen Bericht erfordern — und verdienen. Den fraktionalen QHE behandelt Tapash Chakraborty im nachstehenden Aufsatz.
