On the Use of Market-Based Instruments to Reduce Air Pollution in Asia

Abstract: The high rates of economic activity and environmental degradation in Asia demand the implementation of creative and cost-effective environmental policy instruments that provide polluters with more flexibility to find least-cost solutions to pollution reduction. Despite their many theoretical advantages, the use of market-based instruments (MBIs) is a relatively recent phenomenon in Asia, partly due to policymakers being unfamiliar with MBIs and countries lacking the institutional capacity to implement and enfo… Show more

“…Also, India does not have legislation on sustainability Supply chain sustainability drivers measurement and disclosures for entire SC such as the Supply Chain Transparency act, Norway or the California Transparency in FMCG SC Act, 2010. Only a few multinational FMCG companies in India or large homegrown food companies that work as sourcing partners of these MNCs, are implementing market-based instruments such as tradable permits and ecolabeling (Coria et al, 2019). Also, the standards and certifications for procurement, logistics and other SC functions of the existing FMCG SC are diverse and challenging to enforce at the ground level due to varied sustainability impacts of the FMCG product categories.…”

“…The main research direction of interest for the current study is focused on the efficiency of environment taxes as a market-based instrument used by the governments to achieve pollution reduction goals [9,10]. In 1996, authors Ekins, Andersen and Vos looked at 16 examples of environment taxes in different EU member states with the conclusion that some of these taxes seem to be environmentally efficient in achieving their objectives at a reasonable cost [11].…”

“…Poor air quality has been a major urban environmental issue in cities, especially those large and compact cities in Asia, for the last several decades [ 1 ]. Urbanization alters the local climate, thus contributing to ambient air pollution levels in cities [ 2 ].…”
