On the Use of Steel and Aluminum Materials for Frame Structure of Electric Trike

Abstract: This work investigated the pros and cons of aluminum material used for electric trike frame compared with steel material. With a compact design and small dimension, e-trike is suitable to be used in many relatively small road accesses. However, the compact design can cause the frame to receive high and concentrated stress. The aluminum-based frame had lower strength, but lighter weight compared to the steel-based frame. In this study, the stress evaluation for both aluminum-based and steel-based frames is done… Show more

“…As the future work, the proposed design will be evaluated for its mechanical strength by finite element method and the fabrication process for real application in a motorcycle (Zulaikah et al, 2020). Moreover, real test of motorcycle crash would be also needed to understand how the child seat can protect the passenger (Rahardian et al, 2021). In addition, this work can be also used a reference for education purpose in teaching a Machine Element course in Mechanical Engineering Study Program.…”

“…After designing the chassis and electrical diagram, the prototype is built. The robot's chassis is made of aluminium alloy materials because of their lightweight and non-corrosive behaviour [41]. An aluminium rectangular hollow tube of 30 × 40 × 1 mm for length, width, and thickness, respectively, is used as the main chassis structure.…”

“…It has taken EVs to the next level by increasing their energy efficiency and extending their range of EVs. [90] Aluminium really got a boost from its early models of EVs, such as Tesla's, which used aluminium since it is a lightweight metal and useful for distributing the battery weight evenly. [91] However, the new market models of EVs, like the Nissan Leaf, have opted to go for cheaper steel.…”
