On the validation of the LS-DYNA Geo Metro numerical model

Abstract: The paper presents experiences gained during work with numerical model of Geo Metro vehicle used for simulations of crash tests with road safety barriers. Attention is drawn to the subject of tire/wheel breakage during collision events. Some methods for improvement of the model are presented in the paper. Several results for the normative vehicle numerical tests are introduced. Simulations were carried out using LS-DYNA finite element code with solver version R8.1.

“…The pole was discretized using fully integrated Lagrangian Belytschko-Tsay (BT) shell elements. For the vehicle, the widely used and deeply validated Suzuki Geo Metro FE model was adopted [ 20 , 25 , 26 , 27 ] as modified by the Department of Mechanics of Materials and Structure, Gdańsk University of Technology, Poland [ 26 ]. The model consists of 14,709 shell elements and 820 solids.…”

“…Ref. [ 26 ] focused on improving the fidelity of numerical representations of the wheels of a vehicle impacting a guardrail, and [ 27 ] discussed the set of elastoplastic parameters of a chosen constitutive model of soil that will yield the best correlation of the calculation results with experimental results.…”

“…A composite-foam protective overlay was designed for the guide rail to meet this criterion. The barrier functionality parameters defined in PN-EN 1317-1:2010 Modelling and simulation of crash tests on road safety barriers is still being developed by Dziewulski (2016) and by a research team from Gdansk University of Technology, Poland (Bruski, Burzyński, Chróścielewski, Pachocki, & Witkowski, 2019;Burzyński, Chróścielewski, & Pachocki, 2018;Wilde, Jamroz, Budzyński, Bruski, Burzyński, Chróścielewski, Pachocki, & Witkowski, 2017). The investigations concern rectilinear protective barriers.…”

“…The numerical modelling and simulation methodology follows the methodology presented by Klasztorny, Nycz, & Szurgott (2016). Bruski, Burzyński, Chróścielewski, Pachocki, & Witkowski (2019) analyse the Geo Metro vehicle numerical model used for simulations of crash tests on straight-line road safety barriers, about tire/wheel breakage during the impact. Some methods for improvement of the numerical car model are proposed.…”
