On the venom of the lesser weeverfish,Trachinus vipera

Abstract: SUMMARYA method is described for obtaining the venom from the dorsal fin of the lesser weever without harming the fish. It is suggested that the amount of venom normally injected into the wound by the weever when it stings is O-5-O-2 mg dry weight of venom. Some 60% of the dry weight of the venom appears to consist of toxic muco-substances, which have a neurotoxic effect, but are without toxic effect on the blood. In extracts this fraction may be separated into two albumins and an amino polysaccharide, though … Show more

“…Though proteinaceous toxins and enzymes appear to be the major components in piscine venoms, there is evidence that they contain non-proteinaceous active compounds. For example, a dialyzable fraction from T. vipera venom was found to contain 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), commonly known as serotonin, which is well known as a nociceptive compound [ 164 ]. G. marmoratus venom was also found to contain 5-HT, or a 5-HT-like substance, that was found to act directly at 5-HT receptors and whose action was attenuated by a 5-HT receptor antagonist [ 76 ].…”

“…It shows pro-inflammatory effects by increasing rolling leukocyte numbers in the mouse cremaster muscle postcapillary venules [71]. Porflan does not cross biological membranes unassisted and therefore may target active transport and extracellular domains to elicit activity [72] (table 4).…”

“…Trakonya balık-larının dikenlerini beslenme için kullandıklarına dair her hangi bir bulgu yoktur. Laboratuvar ortamında yapılan deneylerde saklandıkları yerden avlarını saldırarak yakaladıkları ve dikenlerini yalnızca savunma amaçlı kullandıkları bildirilmiştir (Carlisle, 1962).…”
