On the Way to Theory: A Processual Approach

Abstract: Debates on theory have focused on the nature of good theories and the process of theorizing, but have failed to engage with the ontology of becoming emphasized by process philosophers such as Heraclitus, Bergson and James, and more recently by Cooper, Shotter and Chia. This paper argues that engaging with reality as becoming implies departing from any claims of `essence' in theories. Theories are not representations, better or worse, of a particular phenomenon, real or socially constructed. Instead, mobility, … Show more

“…At the extreme contextualist end, everything is in flux, and there is nothing against which any truth claim can be grounded, because there would already have been change as things had moved on. The postmodern type of process research would reside towards this end of the continuum, as well as some of the recent calls for change to be seen as the basic manifestation of (social) reality (Nayak 2008; Tsoukas and Chia 2002). At the extreme generalist end, process is simply seen as conforming to fixed flows and sequences that regulate how one event is followed by the next and automatically leads to a pre‐programmed outcome.…”

“…In siteresponsive interventions the site energises a question and the intervention discusses the question via a response. It is therefore open to the unfinished, which according to Ajit Nayak [11] is related to an ontological becoming as a creative method of theory building. The site-responsive is very much a creative practice engagement energised by theory, with the latter acting as an agent for the conceptualisation and development of the intervention.…”

“…Uma vez que organização e desorganização coexistem e estão intimamente ligadas -o aumento de organização reduz a desorganização -, elas não são essencialmente distintas, mas apenas se diferenciam em gradações (NAYAK, 2008). Assim, ao invés de pressupormos as organizações como entidades coerentes que produzem uma realidade claramente ordenada e organizada, seria mais produtivos falarmos em redes de relações (LAW, 1992;LATOUR, 2005).…”
