On using gait biometrics to enhance face pose estimation

Abstract: Abstract-Many face biometrics systems use controlled environments where subjects are viewed directly facing the camera. This is less likely to occur in surveillance environments, so a process is required to handle the pose variation of the human head, change in illumination, and low frame rate of input image sequences. This has been achieved using scale invariant features and 3D models to determine the pose of the human subject. Then, a gait trajectory model is generated to obtain the correct the face region w… Show more

“…The periodic factor is proportional to walking position; the scaling factor when a person walks toward camera. In [14], we demonstrated this looming effect when a person walks towards camera. However, given the camera projection matrix this looming effect can be removed by 3D analysis.…”

“…The gait trajectory in 2D space contains a non-linear factor; the looming effect [14] which can affect the accuracy of the gait trajectory. Therefore, the domain is changed from the 2D image plane into 3D space using the camera projection matrix because in 3D space there are many advantages such that the height of walking person is constant and the looming effect can be ignored.…”

“…Unlike other methods, our new method can be more robust under translation since our method is based on local feature matching first, and then analyzing the pattern of the face image. In our previous work [30], we presented another experiment at low frame rate ( 10 fps).…”

“…As mentioned before, the frame in which the heel strike takes place can be extracted through the gait motion even when the foot is hidden by another leg and the image quality is low. In this research, the gait trajectory model [10] is deployed. This model is applied to detect the key frame in which the heel strikes happen.…”
