BACKGROUND. Salivary KEYWORDS: salivary duct carcinoma, salivary gland neoplasms, fine-needle aspiration cytology, oncocytic tumor.S alivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is an uncommon, aggressive malignancy of the major salivary glands. The peak incidence is in the sixth and seventh decades. The male-to-female ratio for patients is 3:1. 1,2 First described by Kleinsasser et al., 3 SDC histologically resembles intraductal carcinoma of the breast, with most cases showing comedo and cribriform features. SDC has a tendency to metastasize early, with a propensity for invasion of the facial nerve and lymphovascular spaces. The literature pertaining to the cytology of SDC is limited. The cytologic features of SDC have been described in detail in four cases, 4-6 as well as in abstract form. 7 We report three additional examples of SDC, emphasizing cytologic features that help identify this neoplasm by aspiration cytopathology.
CASE STUDIES Case 1A woman age 70 years presented with a 2-month history of a 1.0 cm, firm, mobile, nontender nodule in the right parotid gland. Physical needles. Half the smears were air-dried and the other half alcoholfixed. Smears were then stained using a modified Romanovsky stain
