“…Much of the early stimulus for the vast amount of research carried out with adenoviruses was provided by the observation of Trentin and his colleagues just over 20 years ago (Trentin et al, 1962) that human adenovirus type 12 could induce tumors following injection into newborn hamsters. Those observations were rapidly confirmed for Ad 12 and extended to other human adenovirus serotypes (Huebner et al, 1962(Huebner et al, , 1965Rabson et al, 1964;Yabe et al, 1964;Pereira et al, 1965) and afforded the first examples of human viruses capable of inducing tumors in experimental animals. Much of the research carried out subsequently has been concentrated on determining whether adenoviruses play any role in human malignancy and on understanding, in as much detail as possible, the mechanisms by which adenoviruses induce oncogenic transformation.…”

“…Some virus strains display low or high oncogenic potentials, or predominantly induce one specific tumour phenotype that is not found as in the Pathogenesis of Human Neurogenic Tumours? 5 frequently with other virus strains (37,68,130). The molecular basis of this variability is as yet unknown.…”

“…Thus, they appeared to act more specifically on viral synthesis. It is of interest that noformicin is the only agent tested that showed strong specific activity against adenovirus type 12, a human virus which has been associated with cancer in hamsters by T rentin et al (23) and H uebner et al (24).…”
