“…Much of the early stimulus for the vast amount of research carried out with adenoviruses was provided by the observation of Trentin and his colleagues just over 20 years ago (Trentin et al, 1962) that human adenovirus type 12 could induce tumors following injection into newborn hamsters. Those observations were rapidly confirmed for Ad 12 and extended to other human adenovirus serotypes (Huebner et al, 1962(Huebner et al, , 1965Rabson et al, 1964;Yabe et al, 1964;Pereira et al, 1965) and afforded the first examples of human viruses capable of inducing tumors in experimental animals.
