One decade of VOCs measurements in São Paulo megacity: Composition, variability, and emission evaluation in a biofuel usage context

Abstract: This is a PDF file of an article that has undergone enhancements after acceptance, such as the addition of a cover page and metadata, and formatting for readability, but it is not yet the definitive version of record. This version will undergo additional copyediting, typesetting and review before it is published in its final form, but we are providing this version to give early visibility of the article. Please note that, during the production process, errors may be discovered which could affect the content, a… Show more

“…These compounds were among the 20 HCs with the highest concentration at the CETESB IPEN/USP AMS during 2011/2012, except for benzene, maintaining the same characteristics of the comparisons between the tunnel campaigns in 2004 with the CETESB IPEN/USP AMS in 2006. Similar results were found by Dominutti et al (2016Dominutti et al ( , 2020 for SPMA, with the most abundant NMHC propane, ethylene, ethane, acetylene, 2,2,4-trymethylpentane, i-propyl benzene, n-butane, toluene, i-pentane and propylene.…”

“…VOCs were measured during the 2006 and 2011-2012 campaigns, in which criteria pollutants and meteorological parameters were also measured. These previous studies were detailed in Alvim et al (2014Alvim et al ( , 2017Alvim et al ( , 2018 e Orlando et al (2010), as well as a comparison with other recent studies for the city of São Paulo (Dominutti et al, 2020;Dominutti et al, 2016;Nogueira et al, 2014;Pérez-Martínez et al, 2014;Salvo & Geiger, 2014).…”

“…Furthermore, its deposition on plant leaves affects their photosynthesis and evaporation ability, hence damaging crop yields (Hill and Littlefield, 1969). Tropospheric O 3 is also a powerful greenhouse gas (GHG) and a photochemical oxidant that plays a key role in the atmosphere (Ehhalt et al, 2001).…”

“…However, the good reproduction of both O 3 and NO x advocates in favor of the production of adequate levels of VOC, at least in the Santiago area. In addition, although such a work is yet to be done for Chile, comparisons of HTAP emissions of VOC with more refined national inventories in South America show that despite a spatial distribution and speciation profile with margin for improvement, total amounts of emitted VOC as provided by HTAP are well in the range of higher resolution inventories based on local observations for Argentina (Puliafito et al, 2017) and São Paulo (Dominutti et al, 2020). In parallel, emissions of NO x and PM 10 from HTAP for the region of Santiago show similar biases and discrepancies as other mega-cities in South America such as Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro (Huneeus et al, 2020), so that we can assume this similarity also applies for VOC.…”
