One Health Approach to Leishmaniases: Understanding the Disease Dynamics through Diagnostic Tools

Abstract: Leishmaniases are zoonotic vector-borne diseases caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania that affect millions of people around the globe. There are various clinical manifestations, ranging from self-healing cutaneous lesions to potentially fatal visceral leishmaniasis, all of which are associated with different Leishmania species. Transmission of these parasites is complex due to the varying ecological relationships between human and/or animal reservoir hosts, parasites, and sand fly vectors. Mor… Show more

“…25 , 26 Endemic in some 100 countries, the leishmaniases are vector-borne diseases caused by about 20 species of protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania and transmitted through a bite of infected female phlebotomine sandflies of over 90 species. 25 , 27 , 28 Due to poor programming and reporting, the true level of disease prevalence is unknown. It is estimated that 1.6 billion of the world’s population lives in areas of potential risk of leishmaniases transmission.…”

“…Anthropogenic factors tend to reorient the composition and behavior of sand y vectors. To date, there are at least 50 different sand y species transmitting leishmaniases [48].…”
