One hundred and five Kaposi sarcoma patients: a clinical study in Xinjiang, Northwest of China

Abstract: In Xinjiang, most CKS and AIDS-KS patients were older Uyghur men. AIDS-KS was found predominantly among 30-year-old Uyghur patients, compared with 60 years for those having CKS. The latter exhibited certain characteristics such as disseminated skin disease; in some patients, the condition was accompanied by lymphedema, visceral or lymph node involvement, but no secondary malignancies. In addition, the HHV-8 positivity rate associated with KS was very high.

“…According to official estimates, there are more than 10 000 HIV‐positive persons living in Xinjiang . Previous data have shown that KSHV infection is endemic in the area and there is a high incidence of KS, particularly among Uygur ethnicity . KS is one of the most frequently occurring malignant tumor in individuals infected with HIV‐1 in Western and African countries .…”

“…It mostly affects elderly men of Italian, Jewish, or Mediterranean origin [3]. In China, more than 90 % of KS cases, including classic KS (CKS) and AIDS-associated KS (AIDS-KS), have occurred in Xinjiang, especially among Uyghur patients [46]. Many studies have demonstrated that human herpes virus 8 (HHV-8) is an important pathogen in KS, and more than 95% of patients with KS have been infected with HHV-8 [7].…”

“…2 In practice, KS generally presents as one or multiple, asymptomatic, red-purple or brown patches, plaques or nodular skin lesions in the lower extremities. 3 C-Kit is involved in cell signal transduction in many different cell types and it encodes tyrosine kinase receptor (CD117). Furthermore, c-Kit is a mutagenic effective proto-oncogene with a stem-cell factor (SCF) as a ligand, and it leads to tumor growth through impairment of cellular growth regulation.…”
