Fernando et al (5)(6)(7) have shown that for an optimum protec tive effect, inosine must be administered directly into the renal artery and Wickham et al (25) have developed a technique of puncturing the clamped renal artery for the appropriate application in clinical use. A double-lumen bai loon-tipped cathe ter inserted percutaneously prior to the operation, renders this technically difficult and potentially dangerous maneuver unnecessary and permits the combination of inosine protection with balloon occlusion of the renal artery, and if necessary, with hypothermic perfusion, in a most simple manner.…”
