One-Pot Synthesis of Polyethylene-Based Block Copolymers via a Dual Polymerization Pathway

Abstract: Polyethylene–poly(methyl acrylate) multiblock copolymers were obtained using a catalyst system consisting of a pentamethylcyclopentadienyl cobalt complex (CoIII(η5-C5H5)P(OMe)3I2) and iso-butyl modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO). As the chain-growth mechanism, the self-switching between organometallic-mediated radical polymerization (OMRP) and coordination–insertion polymerization (CIP) is suggested. As a possible polymerization mechanism, we propose that (1) the methyl and iso-butyl groups transfer from Al … Show more

“…More recently, Nozaki et al introduced a method of “self-switching” between coordination–insertion polymerization and OMRP to prepare multiblock copolymers of PE and PMA . This was accomplished through the utilization of pentamethylcyclopentadienyl cobalt complex (Co III (η 5 -C5H5)P(OMe) 3 I 2 )/MMAO system.…”

“…In free-radical polymerizations this is achieved by reversible trapping of radicals to dormant species, thereby disfavoring termination reactions versus chain growth. Various different approaches such as reversible addition–fragmentation transfer (RAFT), atom transfer radical polymerization, or organometallic mediated radical polymerization can realize the concept of reversible deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP), and they have been studied intensely for a wide range of vinylic monomers. However, controlled radical polymerizations of carbon monoxide have remained elusive.…”
