Carbamic acid derivatives P 0480One-Pot, Three-Step Preparation of Alkyl and Aryl Alkylcarbamates from S-Methyl N-Alkylthiocarbamates. -The synthesis of the target compounds (III) and (VI) can be considered as a valid and safe alternative to the traditional carbamate preparation methods using phosgene. Moreover, the starting thiocarbamates (I) and (IV) are prepared by methylthiocarbonylation of primary aliphatic amines with nontoxic S,S-dimethyl dithiocarbonate and are used without further purification. The new procedure consists of three steps, which are carried out in a one-pot fashion without isolation of the intermediates N-alkylcarbamoyl chloride and alkyl isocyanate. Noteworthy, the co-product of industrial interest, dimethyl disulfide, is recovered in a half mole amount for each mole of thiocarbamate. In addition, the alkyl isocyanates can also be isolated. -(ARTUSO, E.; DEGANI, I.; FOCHI*, R.; MAGISTRIS, C.; Synthesis 2008, 10, 1612-1618; Dip. Chim. Gen. Chim. Org., Univ.
