One stage reconstruction of the floor of the mouth with a subcutaneous pedicled nasolabial flap

Abstract: An inferiorly based pedicled NLF is a reliable flap for the reconstruction of small and medium sized defects in the oral cavity. The flap can be best utilised for old edentulous and high risk patients where it can be used as a single stage procedure which is particularly useful in those types of patients. The flap can be safely combined with neck dissection even when the facial artery was ligated.

“…In addition to failure of the nasolabial flap to significantly improve the IIO[13] in patients afflicted with advanced OSMF, complications such as partial necrosis,[11548] total necrosis,[11548] intraoral hair growth,[12141552] unacceptable extraoral scar,[12131415628] wound dehiscence,[24] loss of nasomaxillary crease,[1215] orocutaneous fistula,[135234] ectropion,[623] and pincushioning effect around the nasolabial fold[155] may also occur. It is prudent to note that these complications occur in a significant proportion of operated patients but are eclipsed by the resultant increase in the IIO.…”

“…In fact, in patients with no history of hypertrophic or keloid scarring, the scar is barely visible, since it is camoufl aged by the nasolabial groove. The cosmetic outcome is satisfactory or very satisfactory for most patients [ 58 ].…”
