One‐Stage Synthesis of Raffinose Fatty Acid Polyesters

Abstract: Liquid polyesters of raffinose (raffinose polyesters, RPE) were synthesized by a one-stage solvent-free interesterification of raffinose undecaacetate (RUAC) and fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) of salad oils, long chain fatty acids and blends thereof. Interesterification was essentially a low temperature, low pressure process consisting of forming a homogenous melt of RUAC and FAME in the presence of an alkali metal catalyst (2% sodium). RPE were formed with 9.5.&99.3% yield based on initial weight of RUAC. Fo… Show more

“…Absorption bands were observed at 3450 cm-' (overtone stretching vibrations), 3000-2860 cm-' (C-H stretch in CH, and/or CH,), 1740 cm-' (ester carbonyl), 1460 cm-' (C-H deformation in CH, and/or CH,), 1380 cm-r (C-H deformation in CH,), 920 cm-' (pyranose ring) and 730 cm-' [(CH,), Iin fatty acids]. The presence of overtone bands at 3450 cm-' confirmed the presence of carbonyl group (Socrates;1980;Akoh and Swanson, 1987).…”

“…Sorbitan esters and sucrose esters are the most developed esters in this category, with a market size of approximately 20,000 and 4000 tons/year, respectively [10]. The chemical synthesis of biosurfactants requires protection and de-protection steps to avoid diester and triester formation as by-products, which affect the surfactant quality [11]. With enzymatic synthesis, monoester production can be increased because of enzymes' high regioselectivity [12,13].…”

Operating parameters such as temperature, enzyme dose, and molar ratio of alcohol and acid have a great impact on the activity of enzymes and eventually conversion in the synthesis of cosmetic esters.…”
