One-step fabrication of soft calcium superhydrophobic surfaces by a simple electrodeposition process

Abstract: We investigated a one-step method for calcium superhydrophobic surface preparation and researched the formation process of loose, flower-like microstructures. Also, we found that the pressing force strongly impacts the dynamics of water droplets.

“…The technique is not only fast, reproducible, and scalable but also allows the fabrication of diverse surface morphologies like rods, sheets, tubes, fibers, cones, and needles by modifying deposition conditions[125]. Superhydrophobic surfaces produced through electrochemical deposition possess potential advantages, offering ease of large-scale morphology creation and ensuring strong bonding between materials, resulting in durable coatings. This method provides precise control over surface morphology, composition, and roughness, offering flexibility in tailoring superhydrophobic coatings for applications such as self-cleaning, anti-fouling, and water-resistant materials[126][127][128][129][130][131][132]. “…[10][11][12][13] Characterizing with rough textures and low-surface-energy chemistry, these coatings enable a liquid drop on their surface to bead up and roll off readily. [14][15][16][17][18][19] Truly harnessing these preferred functions also calls for simultaneously preserving their mechanical durability; however, displaying such two features appears mutually exclusive. 20,21 This is because the liquid repellence requires a minimized interfacial contact area which typically takes advantage of trapping air pockets within rened structures, but makes a trade-off in mechanical durability, especially under abrasion conditions.…”
