“…Ferric chloride, primarily used as a catalyst during HTC synthesis, plays a critical role in carbonization and aromatization 29 31 . When hydrolyzed, ferric chloride forms ferric hydroxide or oxide and hydrochloric acid (HCl) in water 31 . As such the resulting acid catalyzes dehydration of the sugar; reducing sugar intermediates in this system could partially reduce ferric ions to ferrous ions and then be subsequently oxidized into various iron oxide species.…”

“…In 2015, however, graphitic carbon-coated magnetite nanoparticles exhibited a superior photothermal therapeutic effect after the near-infrared irradiation of tumor xenografts that had the nanoparticles distributed in them . Around the same time, in 2015 and 2016, respectively, carbon-coated metallic iron was shown to effectively degrade chlorophenol to concentrations below the detection limit of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and remove chromium ions and rhodamine B from wastewaters, eliciting properties of interest for water purification treatments. Taking advantage of the fact that Fe 3+ ions are acid-leaching, while Si 4+ ions are base-leaching, the two ions were selectively isolated from a roasted drinking water treatment sludge, otherwise a pollutant for waterbodies, in a study from 2016 and used as precursors for the synthesis of silica-coated iron oxide particles, which would then go on and be tested for the adsorption and separation of other sorbates .…”

“…Several synthesis routes have been developed to solve this problem. [14][15][16] Co-precipitation and microemulsion methods can produce large numbers of Fe 3 O 4 particles; however, their particles sizes are usually less than 20 nanometers, which are not suitable for EPD. Guan et al synthesized Fe 3 O 4 particles via a facile solvothermal method by adding poly(vinyl pyrrolidone, PVP), which resulted in approximately spherical clusters with only one diameter of around 150 nm.…”
