In recent years, the strengthening and retrofitting of structural members using externally bonded carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) materials has gained a great deal of attention. This has eventuated from the superior properties of composite materials, including high elastic modulus, higher strengths and lighter weights. This paper presents a finite element analysis that has been validated against laboratory tests of two reinforced concrete (RC) beams, two columns, two slabs and six walls. The main focus is on the ultimate failure load of these members as they have different CFRP orientations to the loading direction. The analysis result shows a sound agreement with the experimental data regarding the ultimate failure load of RC samples, except for the RC wall. In fact, the RC wall, while under eccentric axial load, confirmed that the CFRP orientation was parallel to the loading direction, and it proved to be an insignificant contribution in the ultimate failure load of the samples. This finding demonstrates that more experiments should be considered when investigating the influence of CFRP on the ultimate strength of strengthened RC walls.

ABSTRACT:The Precast Reinforced Concrete Wall Panel (PRCWP) presented in this paper is part of an experimental study regarding the seismic performance of precast reinforced concrete wall panels, strengthening strategies and investigation on the weakening induced by modifying the opening in these elements due to architectural demands, change of function of buildings or other reasons. The element presented is 1:1.2 scale typical Reinforced Concrete Wall Panel with a window opening used in Romania, in which the opening was changed to a door opening due to comfort considerations. The specimen was subjected to cyclic loading with the lateral loads being applied in displacement control of 0.1% drift ratio. This simulates the shear behaviour of the element. After testing the unstrengthen element we proceed to retrofit it using Carbon Fibre Strips anchored with Carbon Fibre Mash. The purpose of the paper is to present the strengthening strategy and restore the initial load bearing capacity of the element or even increase it. The experimental results of strengthen and unstrengthen specimens will be presented.

This study was performed to investigate the joining possibility and characteristics of the dissimilar joint between carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) and amorphous polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic using a continuous wave (cw) diode laser with a line-shaped beam. Tensile shear test results demonstrated that strong lap joints with a maximum load of 3200 N could be produced under some proper conditions, and base amorphous PET plastic sheet was elongated without fracture. It was confirmed from SEM observation that the dissimilar lap joint was tightly bonded near the joint interface between two materials, and simultaneously integrated by the interdiffusion and mixing process at the joint interface of two materials through rapid melting, solidification and cooling during laser joining. Through high speed video camera observation, the joining phenomena generating in the laser irradiated part during laser joining of CFRP to PET was obviously identified. Consequently, it was revealed that strong dissimilar lap joint of CFRP to engineering plastic could be possible by a direct laser irradiation without adhesive bonds or mechanical fasteners.
