Online Deflection Monitoring System for Dafosi Cable-Stayed Bridge

Abstract: A health monitoring system was designed and installed on Dafosi Bridge, the largest cable-stayed bridge across the Yangtze River in western China. This article briefly describes an online deflection monitoring system, the most important sensing subsystem of the health monitoring system. It can be divided into two major components, one for measurement, and one for control and data processing. The measurement system itself includes two types of deflection sensors to monitor the lateral displacement of the two to… Show more

“…For example, a geodetic surveys system can provide a precision of measurement of only 3 mm or so [9]. Another example is that the realistic precision reached by the hydrostatic leveling system decreases drastically with varying liquid temperature although the theoretic precision is estimated as about 0.5 mm [10].…”

“…A CPS (Figure b), using pressure transmitters to detect the changes of liquid levels in the connected pipes, was designed and mounted on this bridge for vertical deflection monitoring. The deflections can be deduced by using simple formulas from the detected changes of liquid levels . The performance of the CPS has been verified through both controlled and uncontrolled load tests as reported in the authors' previous studies .…”

“…Liu et al [22] discussed a connected pipe system based deflection monitoring and condition evaluation for a suspension bridge in China, and a series of load tests were also conducted to validate the proposed system. Zhu et al [23] presented the health monitoring system on Dafosi Bridge. The deflections of this bridge were mainly obtained through a communicating optoelectronic pipe sensor, namely the connected pipe system.…”
