Online estimation and monitoring of local permeability in resin transfer molding

Abstract: Resin transfer molding (RTM) is a popular manufacturing method of composite materials, which have been widely used in many areas including aeronautic, automotive industries, etc. In RTM, permeability of fiber reinforcement varies with its geometric formation and affects the property of resin flow, which influences the final product quality. Therefore, effective estimation of permeability is crucial to achieving good process control and satisfactory quality product. In this article, a method of online estimatin… Show more

“…For illustrating the effectiveness of the proposed method, a CFRP specimen (12 cm  9.5 cm) was produced by a vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) process [18]. The specimen consisted of thermosetting resin and multiple layers of carbon fiber sheets with the thickness of each sheet being 0.26 cm.…”

“…A stochastic multi objective optimisation has been applied to identify robust Pareto sets containing optimal cure cycle designs able to reduce cure time and maximum overshoot temperature by 40% compared to standard solutions whilst reducing variability by about 20% [122]. injection pressure [125]. Surrogate model based optimisations have been implemented to solve the draping problem [126] and to allow robust optimisation of the cure process [122].…”

“…In the experiment, the CFRP specimen with size of 12 cm  9.5 cm was manufactured by vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) technique [30], which was strengthened with multiple layers of carbon fiber sheets. The thickness of each fiber sheet was 0.26 cm.…”
