Online Public Attention of COVID-19 Vaccination in Mainland China

Abstract: With the approval of the vaccine in mainland China, concerns over its safety and efficacy emerged. Since the Chinese vaccine has been promoted by the Chinese government for months and got emergency approval from the World Health Organization. The Chinese vaccination program is yet to be identified from the perspective of local populations. “…With the rapid development of the internet, its role in the monitoring and early warning of infectious diseases had become increasingly evident in recent years. Many studies 35 , 36 had shown that the frequency of queries for diseases and related symptom keywords were highly correlated with the incidence, reflecting the true searchers' need trends. Whilst Google Trends cannot be used for real‐time epidemiological surveillance of monkeypox, it could be exploited to capture the public's response to the outbreak.…”

“…Google Trends is a well-recognized academic approach for investigating public needs [ 28 ]. In this study, we used the Baidu Index, a data analysis platform based on Baidu's extensive network behavior data, to investigate infodemiology evidence of e-cigarettes, as Google is inaccessible in mainland China [ 29 , 30 ]. This approach allows us to gain insight into public attention toward e-cigarettes, which can potentially inform clinicians in their efforts toward lung cancer prevention and treatment, considering that lung cancer is a preventable disease in theory.…”

“…As of 2021, the number of internet users in China has reached 989 million, and the user penetration rate of the Baidu search engine is 90.9%, making it the world's largest Chinese search engine. Many studies have shown that the frequency of queries for diseases and related symptom keywords are highly correlated with the incidence, reflecting the true searchers' need trends ( 18 , 19 ), so the Baidu index for hepatitis E could be utilized in predicting the incidence of hepatitis E. Thus, the LSTM model has much room for improvement.…”
