Construction 4.0 promotes digital transformation through automation, robotisation, and the integration of systems and processes into digital environments, with direct links to real systems, using a wide range of technologies. The risk here is centred on having very advanced machines with people not prepared to use them. If the training is centred on teaching people, however, the risk is transferred to having overqualified equipment. In search of this balance, the study, analysis, and evaluation of human–machine interaction are crucial, as are correctly identifying the tools through which this interaction is achieved. Extended reality (XR), emerging technology within Construction 4.0, seems to be a tool that offers an environment conducive to achieving these interactions and meeting the objectives sought. In civil engineering, efforts have been directed towards the study and development of applications of XR experiences rather than the application of this technology in a transcendental way in civil engineering training. This research identifies developments in XR experiences and analyses their use, application methodologies, and training areas that include immersive training, as well as the relationship between XR and construction industry methodologies and technologies, such as building information modelling.

Peer-review DeclarationThe publisher (AOSIS) endorses the South African 'National Scholarly Book Publishers Forum Best Practice for Peer-Review of Scholarly Books'. The book proposal form was evaluated by our Social Sciences, Humanities, Education and Business Management editorial board. The manuscript underwent an evaluation to compare the level of originality with other published works and was subjected to rigorous two-step peer-review before publication by two technical expert reviewers who did not include the volume editors and were independent of the volume editors, with the identities of the reviewers not revealed to the editors or authors. The reviewers were independent of the publisher, editors and authors. The publisher shared feedback on the similarity report and the reviewers' inputs with the manuscript's volume editors to improve the manuscript. Where the reviewers recommended revisions and improvements, the volume editors and authors responded adequately to such recommendations. The reviewers commented positively on the scholarly merits of the manuscript and recommended that the book be published.v Research justificationThis book intends to advance and enhance knowledge on the future of commerce education in South Africa and to allow relevant scholars from South African commerce faculties the opportunity to share their original scholarly research on how to best position commerce education in South Africa. Metaverses offer immersive virtual realities with potential applications in distance education. Integrating metaverse with assistive technology enables educational advancements and inclusive participation. This paper aims to gather evidence on metaverses, assistive technologies, and distance education. We conducted a Rapid Review analyzing seven studies out of 145 initial bases. As preliminary results, Chemistry Lab was the main focus (42.5%), with evaluation research as the primary strategy (57.1%). The challenges included instrumentation, technical issues, complex systems, student performance, presence, and accessibility assessment. The findings may aid researchers and practitioners in designing inclusive educational experiences in the metaverse.
