Online teaching in radiology as a pilot model for modernizing medical education: results of an international study in cooperation with the ESR

Abstract: Background Due to the outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), it proved necessary to rapidly change medical education from on-site to online teaching. Thus, medical educators were forced to rethink the purpose of teaching and the best form of transmission of knowledge. “…Online anonymous questionnaires about the effectiveness of different teaching methods could be distributed to students. For example, students may be asked to report their confidence in different teaching methods based on the Likert scale (Stoehr et al, 2021). The commonly used scale was five points, for instance, when using a certain method to discuss a parasite with peers, students could report their confidence with 1 being not confident at all, 2 being unconfident, 3 being neutral, 4 being confident and 5 being extremely confident.…”

“…Associated with these measures, substantial changes in everyday life, processes, and routines occurred. At universities, the sudden absence of personal contact with peers and faculty; shifting or cancellation of schedules, research, practical work, or exchange programs; profound changes in students' financial and housing situations; and the abrupt switch to online learning (2)(3)(4) had far-reaching consequences, not only for students' education but also for their mental health, social behaviors (5), and healthrelated lifestyle behaviors in general. In the context of healthrelated lifestyle behaviors, sedentary behavior (SB) appears to be a prominent factor, especially in times of online learning.…”
