Ontogeny of the human fetal, neonatal, and infantile basioccipital bone: Traditional and extended eigenshape geometric morphometric analysis

Abstract: The basioccipital bone is an essential developmental component to the occipital bone, occipital condyles, foramen magnum, clivus, and cranial base. The basioccipital bone joins each exoccipital bone with a basiexoccipital synchondrosis and the basisphenoid/sphenoid bone with a spheno‐occipital synchondrosis. The basioccipital is found intermediate to the petrous temporal bones and forms the bilateral petrooccipital/petroclival fissures otherwise known as the petrooccipital complex. Thus, the basioccipital bone… Show more

“…More promising results in terms of bone formation were expected for G4; however, the fact that in vitro cell expansion takes a long time must be considered [64], as well as the embryological origin of the mandible, which derives from intramembranous ossification, with bone repair thus being slower when compared to endochondral bones. Intramembranous ossification, vascularization and surrounding soft tissues must be considered [3,74] since these factors are determinants for the choice of membrane to be used as implant.…”

“…Thus, the glenoid is likely more resistant to degradation in skeletal remains. This notion is similar, to the forensic value of the relatively robust basioccipital bone (which forms via endochondral ossification) when compared to the parietal bone (which forms via intramembranous ossification) in identifying the age-at-death from fetal cranial remains, for example (Zdilla et al, 2022).…”
