Ontology-based metadata

Abstract: We propose a new catalog based on a formal ontological model of bibliographic relations. A hierarchy of five central concepts describes the creation of work. Each kind of relation between works occurs at a particular level in the hierarchy. Related works share data at some level of the hierarchy, yielding a tree structure that reduces redundant representation of shared attributes. To show that ontology-based metadata is practical, we generated a knowledge base of metadata from a sample of MARC records. We imple… Show more

“…FRBR has been analyzed critically by a number of authors (Weinstein, 1998;Abrams, 2002;Taniguchi, 2002, Carlyle 2004. Some have proposed alternatives with more or fewer entities, or different assignments of attributes to entities, or a radically different general framework altogether.…”

“…This has been reflected in the drafted schema evaluated in this study. Terms from thesauri are required or suggested for some elements such as “Object/Work Type” and “Grade.” Ontology‐based metadata has also been widely studied, as it helps with the integration of entities and standardization of terminologies for the cultural heritage domain (Weinstein, ; Maedche & Zacharias, ; Schuurman & Leszczynski, ). With the help of computational technologies, several digital libraries and online repositories of cultural heritage sites have been established worldwide, including the Digital Dunhuang project, HistoricPlacesLA, and Ancient Locations .…”
