Ontology-Based Representation of Meta-Design in Designing Decision Workflows

Abstract: Utilizing the enterprise capital related the knowledge of design processes has become crucial to improve enterprise agility and respond to shifts or changes in markets. The complexity and uncertainty of design raise the challenge of capturing tacit knowledge and the ability to aid in designing design processes. In this paper, ontology is proposed for capturing, representing, and documenting the knowledge related to hierarchical decision workflows in the meta-design of complex engineered systems. The ontology i… Show more

“…In terms of the design information, the representation methods can be summarized into three different approaches, including logic-based representation, matrix-based representation, and graph-based representation (Wang R, 2018). In the logic-based representation, concepts and explicit relationships are described using first-order logic, description logic, production rule, and so forth (Witherell et al, 2010).…”

“…Meanwhile, regarding the representation and archiving of design information, the conventional approaches are typically centred on structuring function-related design information (Hu et al, 2022). For example, user needs are translated into functional-related statements and design information is represented in functional aspects, such as function and behaviour, and structural aspects, such as component and solution Wang R, 2018).…”

“…Wynn and Clarkson [35] emphasize the importance of integration, interoperability and sustainability across the product lifecycle for increasing business agility. Wang et al [36] suggest using a strategic approach based on product lifecycle management (PLM), considering product data and information as part of design activities and core business processes. In the context of I4.0, processing intellectual capital is increasingly valued as the key to improving business agility and realizing the benefits of smart manufacturing.…”
