Onychomycosis: clinical, mycological and in vitro susceptibility testing of isolates of Trichophyton rubrum

Abstract: BACKGROUND Onychomycosis or nail fungal infection is the most common nail disease. Despite the wide range of studies on this condition, it remains difficult to establish the correct diagnosis and effective treatment. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the efficacy of classical laboratory methods for the diagnosis of onychomycosis, and the in vitro susceptibility of the its main etiological agent to antifungals used in routine. METHODS Nail samples of 100 patients with clinically suspected feet onychomycosis were collected… Show more

“…FLU showed the reduced susceptibility values in comparison with all tested antifungals. These findings were in line with previous studies [10,[38][39][40][41][42][43][44]46], indicating the low potency of FLU against all dermatophyte species. In our study, the Gm MIC data of GRZ also seem to be higher [9,[39][40][41]44] and/or lower than previous reports [38,42].…”

“…Up until now, few reports have evaluated in vitro activity of some antifungal agents against dermatophyte species in Iran [35][36][37][38]. Our results show similarity to some previous studies [9,[39][40][41][42][43] and also in contrast to some other reports [38,44].…”

“…Therefore, we wanted to determine what types of changes occur in the fungus after ICZ pulse therapy for 3–4 months in vivo , whether the fungi are completely destroyed, and why tinea unguium recurs or fails to heal. Although there have been a large number of reports on the in vitro susceptibility testing of fungi to ICZ, the antifungal effects of ICZ in vivo remain unclear. In vitro , several ultrastructural changes of ICZ‐treated fungus have been shown by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) .…”

“…This may have been due to emergence of antifungal resistance. [18,19] This in turn, may have been caused by irrational use of antifungal agents, especially when combined with steroids. Use of the latter results in alleviation of…”
