OP0254-HPR Hand exercise for women with rheumatoid arthritis and decreased adl ability: an exploratory randomised controlled trial

Abstract: BackgroundDecreased strength and range of motion in the hand are often seen in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Positive effects on hand function in RA patients after hand exercise and individual education in joint projection including coping strategies (ADL education) is shown (1;2). However, it is unknown if a combination of both will further improve hand performance.ObjectivesTo investigate the effect on ADL ability of a hand exercise program as add on to an ADL education program in women with RA.MethodsWomen wit… Show more

“…In phase one, the following six studies (Table 2) were presented and formed the basis for the brainstorm; a multidisciplinary, client-centered and groupbased fall prevention program among elderly people [16,17]; an OT intervention program training community-based caregivers in the use of assistive technology for prevention in the working environment [18]; an individually tailored, home-based OT intervention program involving adaptive strategies, assistive technology and home modifications among people with advanced cancer [19]; a group-based OT intervention program teaching problem-solving strategies involving adaptation for women with chronic pain [7]; a group-based multidisciplinary lifestyle intervention including diet, exercise, and cognitive-behavioral training to promote habit changes among overweight female health care workers [21,22]; and an individually, tailored OT compensatory intervention program addressing assistive devices and alternative methods of doing when performing ADL tasks among women with rheumatoid arthritis [20]. The studies were conducted in different regions of Denmark and in Sweden and represented different research groups and a variety of clients involved in the studies.…”

“…However, the variety also strengthens the validity of the results to synthesize the experience of studies across practices and participants. Of the six studies, one was conducted in Sweden [16,17] and the other five in Denmark [7,[18][19][20][21][22]. Still, the health care culture and organization in Denmark and Sweden has many similarities limiting the validity across countries and calling for more international studies to be incorporated in future studies.…”
