Open access at the national level: A comprehensive analysis of publications by Finnish researchers

Abstract: Open access (OA) has mostly been studied by relying on publication data from selective international databases, notably Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus. The aim of our study is to show that it is possible to achieve a national estimate of the number and share of OA based on institutional publication data providing a comprehensive coverage of the peer-reviewed outputs across fields, publication types and languages. Our data consists of 48,177 journal, conference and book publications from 14 Finnish universitie… Show more

“…Consequently, an evolving body of bibliometric research investigates the uptake of this publishing model. While strong evidence exists that OA is growing (Archambault et al, 2014;Laakso & Björk, 2012;Piwowar et al, 2018), quantitative studies focusing on countries and research institutions revealed notable variations from the general trend (Bosman & Kramer, 2018;Martin-Martin et al, 2018;Huang, 2020;Robinson-Garcia et al, 2020, Pölönen et al, 2020. Here, we contribute to this evolving evidence-base of OA to journal articles at the level of institutions with an analysis of the situation in Germany between 2010 and 2018.…”

“…Unsurprisingly, older studies report lower rates (Bjork et al 2010;Gargouri et al 2010), reinforcing the findings of many scholars that open access is on the rise (Abediyarandi & Mayr 2019;Archambault et al 2014;Archambault et al 2013;Gargouri et al 2010;Laakso et al 2011;Maddi 2019;Martín-Martín et al 2018;Piwowar et al 2018;Wang et al 2018). The growth of Gold open access in particular has been noted (Archambault et al 2014;Martín-Martín et al 2018;Piryani et al 2019;Pölönen et al 2019). Despite this, the literature clearly shows that open access development varies by discipline (Bjork et al 2010;Bosman & Kramer 2019;Maddi 2019;Martín-Martín et al 2018;Piryani et al 2019;Robinson-Garcia et al 2020;Sivertsen et al 2019) and country (Archambault et al 2014;Maddi 2019;Martín-Martín et al 2018;Robinson-Garcia et al 2020Sivertsen et al 2019Torres-Salinas et al 2019;Wang et al 2018).…”

“…Different methods are used according to the aims of the research. Some studies focus on a given country (Abediyarandi & Mayr 2019;Bosman & Kramer 2019;Holmberg et al 2019;Mikki et al 2018;Piryani et al 2019;Pölönen et al 2019;Sivertsen et al 2019) open access type (Wang et al 2018) or funder (Kirkman 2018). Others aim for a global overview (Archambault et al 2014;Laakso et al 2011;Martín-Martín et al 2018;Piwowar et al 2018;Robinson-Garcia et al 2020Wang et al 2018.…”

“…Because of this diversity, it is difficult to draw comparisons between results. Most recent studies point to an overall open access rate of between 45 and 55% ( Bosman & Kramer, 2019 ; Martín-Martín et al., 2018 ; Piwowar et al, 2018 ; Pölönen et al, 2019 ). This is significant because an open access rate of 50% is posited as a “tipping point” by some ( Archambault et al, 2013 ).…”
