Open and Distance Learner Engagement with Online Mediation Tools: An Activity Theory Analysis

Abstract: This paper presents the results of a study conducted to ascertain the extent to which participants studying in an open and distance learning context utilized the mediation tools provided in an Advanced Writing Skills course, conducted in a blended-learning mode in Sri Lanka. Sixty-four participants engaged in the online component of the writing course using the Process Approach. The course consisted of seven sessions; four addressing the stages of the Process Approach to writing an essay, and three practice se… Show more

“…These added elements in an activity system act as mediators and the relationships between these elements are continually refereed (Zurita and Nussbaum 2007 as cited by Alghamdi & Plunkett, 2022;Gedera, 2014a;Lee et al, 2021). Therefore, as described by Engeström (1987), the Activity Theory (AT) model consists of six main components within a system and the activity is an outcome of the interactions of those components (Lee et al, 2021; J. C. N. Pullenayegem et al, 2020). These components are subject, object, tools, community, rules, and the division of labor (Barhoumi, 2016;Lee et al, 2021;Nguyen & Habók, 2021;Soleimani & Rahimi, 2021).…”

“…In accomplishing this, the individual or a group of individuals (subject) operates within a set of guidelines (rules), recognized by the public (community) who negotiate and mediate the rules that describe how it functions. Finally, the roles and relationships within the community, which is also responsible for organizing how each individual is assigned work (a division of labor) to accomplish the activity goals (outcomes) (Engeström, 2001; J. C. N. Pullenayegem et al, 2020;Yakubu & Dasuki, 2021).…”

“…The Activity Theory (AT) has been used as a theoretical framework for an extensive range of phenomena in many disciplines to capture the complexities involved in learning (Abdullah, 2014;Lee et al, 2021). The Activity theory (AT) has also drawn much attention from academics and researchers interested in the ampli cation of the ways technology can be exploited within activity systems (Abdullah, 2014;Lioutas et al, 2019) and its high validity has been demonstrated empirically in various earlier studies in the eld of education (Abdullah, 2014;Alghamdi & Plunkett, 2022;Barhoumi, 2016;Engeström & Sannino, 2021;Gedera, 2014a;Gedera et al, 2013;Karanasios, 2018;Lee et al, 2021;Lioutas et al, 2019;Nguyen & Habók, 2021;Pullenayegem et al, 2021;Pullenayegem et al, 2020;Soleimani & Rahimi, 2021;Yakubu & Dasuki, 2021) and many others eld such as healthcare (Valecha et al, 2019;Yakubu & Dasuki, 2021), and information systems (Simeonova, 2018;Yakubu & Dasuki, 2021).…”
