Open-Circuit Fault Analysis and Fault-Tolerant Control for 2/3-Level DAB Converters

Abstract: Open-circuit faults (OCFs) on power switches are crucial issues for the two-three (2/3)-level dual-active-bridge (DAB) DC-DC converters, resulting in various performance degradation such as DC bias, overcurrent and capacitor voltage imbalance. There are two necessary steps for overcoming these problems, i.e., fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control. In order to identify the faulty switch, the characteristics of the transient waveforms when the OCF occurs on each switch are analyzed in this paper. Based on t… Show more

“…There are many fault diagnosis methods that can be utilized for this DAB-based converter [12], [24]- [31]. The common method are using the midpoint voltage of the legs [20], [28], [29] or transformer currents [29]- [31] to detect the open circuit fault localization. Both these methods can be applied for this current fed DAB converter.…”

“…A. Universal Operating Constraint for NPC-Based DAB For the 2/3-level DAB converters, the terminal voltage v cd of the NPC bridge can be two-level (v cd ∈ {±V 2 }) [33], threelevel (v cd ∈ {0, ±V 2 }) [8], four-level (v cd ∈ {±0.5V 2 , ±V 2 }) [34], and five-level (v cd ∈ {0, ±0.5V 2 , ±V 2 }) [9], [10] depending on the applied modulation strategies. Regardless of the modulation strategies, the voltage v cd should not be affected by the polarity of the inductor current i L .…”

“…This paper is an extension of [28] with the following improved contributions: the analysis of the OCF characteristics under all ranges of the voltage conversion ratio, a comprehensive comparison of the power transfer capability between the BPA and CSB methods, the extension of the OCF analysis to multi-phase-shift control schemes, and the experimental verification of the theoretical analysis. The rest of this paper is organized as follows.…”
