Open Science: What, Why, and How

Abstract: Open science is a collection of actions designed to make scientific processes more transparent and results more accessible. Its goal is to build a more replicable and robust science; it does so using new technologies, altering incentives, and changing attitudes. The current movement toward open science was spurred, in part, by a recent series of unfortunate events within psychology and other sciences. These events include the large number of studies that have failed to replicate and the prevalence of common re… Show more

“…Overall, there seems to be growing enthusiasm towards increasing transparency in research, and there is increasing talk of an "Open Science Movement" (Spellman, Gilbert, & Corker, 2017 (http://improvingpsych.org/mission/), and the past two SIPS meetings have already resulted in tangible steps forward (e.g., StudySwap and PsyArXiv) and offers a platform for scholars of all levels of seniority to share their experiences and ideas, to come up with solutions to improve the field.…”

“…Whether those materials are used in the same manner or altered in a conceptual replication, access to the materials allows increased control of differences between current and prior research. Increasing experimental control by more closely aligning research studying similar concepts is a benefit for science of research materials transparency, but there are also personal benefits for the researcher to be more open (Ebersole et al 2016;McKiernan et al, 2016;Spellman, Gilbert, & Corker, 2017), including increased citation rates, better visibility of research, and opportunities for further collaboration. Online repositories provide more space to share details, whereas before we did not.…”

“…A core principle of open science is to improve access to findings from research, and this principle is driving countless researchers, funders, and policymakers to undertake a range of bottom‐up and top‐down initiatives to increase the accessibility of research findings (e.g., Marsden, in press; McKiernan et al., ; Spellman, Gilbert, & Corker, ). Language Learning now contributes to this agenda by asking authors of manuscripts accepted for publication to write short, nontechnical summaries of their article.…”
